Abolishing Private Prisons Is a Start, But It Will Not End Mass

POLITICS & ELECTIONSFiery Disagreements Erupt at Sixth Democratic Debate
In October, California Gov. Gavin Newsom
greenlit new criminal legal legislation that has
drawn considerable attention. Among its provisions, Assembly Bill 32 claims
to halt contracts with private prisons, end immigration
detention camps, and alleviate some of the burden associated with court, parole
and probation fees. While this legislation is a small victory in its own right,
the flurry of reports celebrating it deeply mislead us about the nature of
incarceration, policing and justice in the United States. https://truthout.org/articles/abolishing-private-prisons-is-a-start-but-it-will-not-end-mass-incarceration/

ICC to investigate Israel's war crimes in Palestinian territories
Friday, 20 December 2019 5:18 PM [ Last
Update: Friday, 20 December 2019 5:24 PM ]
The International Criminal Court (ICC) says it will launch a full
investigation into war crimes in the Palestinian territories, a move welcomed
by the Palestinian government.
In a statement on Friday, ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda expressed her
satisfaction with a "reasonable basis" to probe into the situation in
Palestine.
"In brief, I
am satisfied that war crimes have been or are being committed in the West Bank,
including East Jerusalem (al-Quds), and the Gaza Strip," she added,
without specifying the perpetrators of the crimes. https://www.presstv.com/Detail/2019/12/20/614168/ICC-Fatou-Bensouda-investigation-Palestinians-Israel-war-crime?fbclid=IwAR1vSfVvq6lWKoslYN04iQ5z3AhAeqMFySWM8lmp1ygviN0famzPQ3Vz0qc

Given $738 Billion, US War
Budget Hits the Motherlode (Again)
The delusions of
militarism live on in a nation addicted to violence and bloodshed for profit.
ByRobert

budget, passed
recently by both the House (377-48) and Senate
(82-8), came in at $738 billion for 2020, up from last year a sweet $22 billion.War hits the
motherlode every year.“The money just isn’t there” for virtually anything that
matters — you know, healthcare for all, free college tuition, clean water,
eco-sustainable energy production — but we’ve sold the national soul to the war
god so long ago that the perfunctory, bipartisan passage of the National
Defense Authorization Act comes and goes every year with, at most, a few
marginal cries of outrage and a big shrug from the media. https://www.commondreams.org/views/2019/12/19/given-738-billion-us-war-budget-hits-motherlode-again?fbclid=IwAR3M5Zw3IaUZd9TxYYfqym5Wr2WOpw0M3kA1FNrGlF3hzO1pRTQ54FD7Avc

Supply Botanists have made a
new census of terrestrial plants — only to find that with nearly 40% of them rare,
or extremely rare, this may put food at risk. And a second team of researchers, in
a separate study, has established that some of these rare or
vanishing species could include the wild relatives of some
of the planet’s most popular vegetables.
The two studies matter. The first
underlines yet another reason for new and determined conservation strategies to
preserve the extraordinary natural variety and richness of life — the shorthand
word that scientists use is biodiversity — already under pressure from the
explosion in human numbers, the destruction of natural habitats and the looming
catastrophe of climate change driven by rapidly rising global
temperatures. https://truthout.org/articles/climate-crisis-threatens-a-third-of-plant-species-endangering-food-supply/

girl, a study in pain. There are balloons in the room, dolls on the bed, and a
grandmother by her side – but Miral’s face bespeaks suffering. Occasionally,
she is on the brink of tears, but holds back in order not to cry in front of

weep. She’s sitting on the bed, the chemo tube attached to her arm, dripping
the liquid directly into her vein. https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/.premium-israel-won-t-let-this-gaza-girl-s-parents-visit-in-hospital-where-she-fights-cancer-1.8292205?fbclid=IwAR2FVDzU8_H8SyAz5w8kEeoNUwfD99PqPyZYEVNQEqldnSMsXqdsE6mPnHE
