Dogs can bring a person happiness, love, laughter
... and sometimes strange infections. Case in point: A woman in Israel was
diagnosed with a bacterial infection that she likely contracted from innocent
puppy licks, according to a new report.Last year, the 86-year-old woman went to
the hospital with a fever, nausea, vomiting and pain in her right leg. She was
wheelchair-bound and being treated for diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, according to the report, published Dec. 2 in The Journal of Emergency Medicine. https://www.livescience.com/puppy-lick-streptococcus-canis.html

Fish' Washed Up on a California Beach Despite
their nickname, a "penis fish" is neither a penis nor a fish.
(Discuss among yourselves.) It's really a type of nonsegmented marine worm
native only to the Pacific Coast between Southern Oregon and Baja California,
Mexico. (The photo above was taken on Drakes Beach, north of San Francisco, on
Dec. 6.) The blob's real name is Urechiscaupo — but it's known more commonly as the
"fat innkeeper worm." https://www.livescience.com/thousands-of-penis-fish-stranded-california.html
➽=ALLThe Most Energetic Flashes of Light in the Universe Produce
Deadly Nuclear Reactions Gamma-ray bursts are among the most powerful events in the
universe, ignited when stars die in massive explosions or when they merge in …
massive explosions.
As these violent cosmic explosions occur, they act
like cosmic lighthouses, releasing beams of some of the brightest light in the universe, along with a flood of neutrinos, those wispy, ghost-like particles that slip
through the universe almost entirely undetected. https://www.livescience.com/gamma-ray-bursts-are-deadlier-than-thought.html
➽=ALLWhat Is
Space-Time? The fabric of space-time is a conceptual model combining the
three dimensions of space with the fourth dimension of time. According to the
best of current physical theories, space-time explains the unusual relativistic
effects that arise from traveling near the speed of light as well as the motion of massive objects in the universe.
Who discovered space-time? The famous physicist Albert
Einstein helped develop the
idea of space-time as part of his theory of relativity. Prior to his pioneering
work, scientists had two separate theories to explain physical phenomena: Isaac Newton's
laws of physics described the motion of massive objects, while James Clerk
Maxwell's electromagnetic models explained the properties of light, according to NASA.Related: Newton's
Laws of MotionA
person in a superfast rocket will measure time to be moving slower and the
lengths of objects to be shorter compared with a person traveling at a much
slower speed. That's because space and time are relative — they depend on an
observer's speed. But the speed of light is more fundamental than
either. The conclusion that space-time is a single fabric wasn't one that
Einstein reached by himself. That idea came from German mathematician Hermann
Minkowski, who said in a 1908 colloquium, "Henceforth space by itself, and time by
itself, are doomed to fade away into mere shadows, and only a kind of union of
the two will preserve an independent reality."The space-time he described
is still known as Minkowski space-time and serves as the backdrop of
calculations in both relativity and quantum-field theory. The latter describes
the dynamics of subatomic particles as fields, according to astrophysicist and
science writer Ethan Siegel.https://www.livescience.com/space-time.html

Babies Are Born 'Undercooked' and No One Knows WhyGiant panda babies are born
weirdly tiny and underdeveloped. No one knows why, and the major theory just
turned out to be wrong.Carnivorans — an order of mammals that includes all bears, dogs, cats,
raccoons, weasels and seals, among other
species — tend to enter the world small, weak, hairless and blind, according to
a new paper published Dec. 2 in the Journal of Anatomy. But bears in particular
tend to give birth to unusually small cubs. https://www.livescience.com/giant-panda-tiny-baby.html

➽=ALLEarth's Magnetic
North Pole Continues Drifting, Crosses Prime MeridianEarth's magnetic
north pole, which has been wandering faster than expected in recent years, has
now crossed the prime meridian. Magnetic
north has been lurching away from its previous home in the Canadian Arctic
toward Siberia at a rate of about 34 miles (55 kilometers) a year over the past
two decades. The latest model of the Earth's
magnetic field, released Dec. 10 by the National Centers for Environmental
Information and the British Geological Survey, predicts that this movement will
continue, though likely at a slower rate of 25 miles (40 km) each year. https://www.livescience.com/earth-magnetic-north-passes-prime-meridian.html
